Zhuang Ziyu delivered a keynote speech and engaged in a dialogue with Pritzker Architecture Prize juror Benedetta Tagliabue at the RIBA Tongji Master Forum

October 22, 2025

On October 22nd, the "Poetic Dwelling" master lecture, co-hosted by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP) at Tongji University, was held at the Zhongting Lecture Hall of CAUP, Tongji University.

Centered on the theme of "Spirit of Nature, History and Community – Constructing Warm Architectural Experiences", the lecture invited internationally renowned architects including Benedetta Tagliabue (RIBA International Fellow and Pritzker Architecture Prize juror), Zhuang Ziyu (Founder/Principal Architect of BUZZ Architecture Office), Bo Hongtao (Chair of RIBA China Chapter), Ren Lizhi (Chief Architect of Tongji Architectural Design Group), and Yao Yi (Chief Architect of Commercial Complexes at China Resources Land), to engage in an in-depth dialogue spanning cultures and multiple perspectives.

Moderated by Lü Man, RIBA's Chief Representative for China and Asia Development, the forum attracted over 300 attendees including architects, designers, teachers and students. It aimed to, through the sharing of Chinese and foreign architects and practitioners, explore ways to break the boundaries of conventional thinking, integrate Eastern and Western wisdom, inspire imagination about future habitats, and contribute ideological insights to promoting sustainable development and humanistic care in Asia's architectural community.

The keynote session kicked off with Benedetta Tagliabue's lecture, which focused on her acute responses to local culture and environment. She integrates nature, history and community spirit into spaces, and through flowing organic forms and rich materials, creates architectural experiences that are both symbolic and filled with humanistic warmth.

Zhuang Ziyu, Principal Architect of BUZZ, continued the keynote with examples from his years of project practice. He addressed the creative translation of tradition and contemporaneity, exploring how architecture can respond to site characteristics and contextual environments – making space both a container for experiencing regional culture and an open text for dialogue with the world. This constructs an experimental bridge between globalization and locality.
