In May 2020, Columbia University Architecture, Planning and Preservation invited Ziyu Zhuang to record graduation speeches for the class of 2020 graduates and broadcast the video on graduation ceremony. The video was also posted on the Columbia University GSAPP official website and official Instagram.

Every May, when the night falls, the Empire State Building wears the Columbia Blue, which means the graduation season is coming.

The 226th graduation ceremony of Columbia University was held on May 20, 2020 in New York, USA. This Ivy League institution with a history of nearly 300 years, under the guardianship of Columbia Goddess Alma Mater, has nurtured a lot of outstanding students. Unlike previous graduation ceremonies, this year's graduation ceremony in Columbia University were affected by the epidemic and have been held online.

Ziyu Zhuang is the principal architect of Büro Ziyu Zhuang. As a graduate of Columbia University, class of 2007, he felt honored to receive the invitation from Columbia University, and participated in sharing activities during this time. We will summarise the highlights of Ziyu Zhuang in the activities of GSAPP in 2020, hoping to give some suggestions and encouragement to the graduates of architecture. Congratulations for graduation! We hope everyone have a bright future.

They shared their experiences of graduation and entrepreneurial, how to deal with the economic depression, what they learned from the beginning of careers, and answered questions from graduate students.

Takeaway from Charles Renfro:" I want to say something specifically to your generation, which is we found that you guys come out of school with incredibly broad skill sets. All remodeling programs and all the digital software. All of these things are wonderful. I hope you can not only think through a problem but can also problematize a problem." 

Takeaway from Ersela Krippa:" Be nimble and be flexible."

Takeaway from Ziyu Zhuang: "If you want to do your own practices, you should better have your own identity and story."

Meet the Firm is a series of virtual career services for new job seekers in the design, development, planning, preservation and critical practice at Columbia University. This event aims to invite GSAPP’s alumni from well-known companies to share their successful experiences and become an important resource for graduates before they come to society.
