Won the ICONIC AWARDS 2018: Innovative Architecture - Best of Best

Recently, the ICONIC AWARDS award ceremony was held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Munich, Germany. Zhuang Ziyu, a partner of RSAA Design Group and the chief architect, and Frédéric Ripperger, a German partner, attended the award ceremony. “Tongling Recluse”won the ICONIC AWARDS 2018: Innovative Architecture - Best of Best. The ICONIC Architectural Design Award accepts submissions from architectural design projects from all over the world every year. A total of 15 architectural projects have won the Supreme Award this year. In addition, the awards include a “winner” and a “selection” award. Other award-winning architecture firms include gmp · Architekten von Gerkan , HPP Architekten GmbH, KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten, schneider+schumacher and other well-known German firms. Domestic design companies Wutopia Lab and Vector Architects both won the Supreme Award.

The ICONIC AWARDS sponsored by the German Brand Design Committee is the highest-ranking and most competitive top design award in Germany, covering the concepts of "full building · large design" and "service leading global interior design". ICONIC AWARDS include the "Iconic Architecture Design Award" and the "Iconic Product Design Award". The two awards are held once a year to recognize outstanding architectural projects and products, and also reward outstanding individuals and companies.

STATEMENT OF THE JURY

The magnificent design for the Tongling Recluse house was derived from a traditional old house that was in a dilapidated condition. The project involved enlarging the existing structure and extending the floor plan in two directions via an additional supporting axis.   

The traditional folding roof was also cleverly supplemented, and care was taken to ensure a continuous line. Upon completion of the new foundation, the former exterior walls were converted into interior supporting walls that now delimit the main room of the house.   

The modern take on traditional roofs (for which the old tiles were kept and reused) is particularly successful here. A very radical solution that nonetheless remains true to traditional architecture – and that also qualifies as a sustainable structure.
